Trolltech Releases Qt and Qtopia Core 4.3 Beta
Oslo, 21 March - 2007
-
Trolltech® today announced the first beta of Qt® 4.3 – the upcoming feature release of its leading framework for high performance cross-platform application development. Also previewed is Qtopia® Core 4.3: the leading application framework for single-application devices powered by embedded Linux. The beta releases will be followed by a Release Candidate at the end of April and a full release currently scheduled for June 2007.
The betas present a range of new features – on and behind the desktop – as well as numerous performance improvements and optimizations to commercial users and open source community for testing and feedback. Main new feature additions include:
Enhanced Support for Native Windows® Vista™ Applications The addition of comprehensive support for Vista styles and animations now enables Qt developers to create applications that look and feel at home on the next-generation Windows platform. With Qt 4.3, Qt-based applications are now fully compliant with Vista style guidelines, and take advantage of the latest Vista innovations.

QtScript: An Integrated EMCA Standard Scripting Engine Qt 4.3 will introduce a fully-integrated, EMCA standard scripting engine, which is up to 100 times faster than QSA. QtScript provides QObject integration – bringing Qt’s signals & slots mechanism to scripting – as well as powerful integration between C++ and scripting.
Heavily Improved OpenGL® Engine Significant enhancements to the Qt OpenGL engine provide speed and quality improvements, enabling the use of Qt to develop higher fidelity or higher performance 3D visualization applications. Qt 4.3 now allows the use of OpenGL to create UI elements for more elegant, dynamic user interfaces.
More Flexible Main Window Architecture Newly added Main Window styles add flexibility to the Qt Mainwindow architecture. Main Window now supports different style paradigms, as well as more advanced tabs, title bars and animated toolbars for more sophisticated effects like those found in Vista and Mac®OS X.
Added Support for SSL Communications
The QtNetwork module has been extended to include support for Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
communications via the QSslSocket class, enabling support for the HTTPS protocol. Qt's network proxying
facilties have been extended to cover HTTP CONNECT proxying, and also
include support for Cram-MD5 and NTLM authentication.
SVG File Generation Completing the SVG rendering support introduced with Qt 4.2, Qt 4.3 introduces the capability to save Qt rendering operations in the form of SVG output, allowing Qt applications to both render and output vector graphics.
Qtopia Core Improvements A range of enhancements to Qtopia Core are previewed in the beta, including speed optimizations and accelerated graphics API improvements, increased memory efficiency through font sharing between applications, and support for OpenGL ES.
